On February 28, 2020, the Hangyoreh 21 magazine featured an exposé on the widespread case of the coronavirus at a psychiatric ward at Daenam Hospital in Cheongdo County in North Gyeongsang Province. Epidemiologists struggled to determine the identity of the superspreader: it could have been the 61-year-old woman (case number 31) affiliated with the Sincheonji Church of Jesus (the Temple of the Tabernacle of the Testimony) who had visited the facility early that month after attending a worship service with some 1000 members in Daegu. Perhaps it was a staff member or patient who had come into contact with a cult member outside the ward. However, one terrifying fact was certain: all the patients in the mental ward had tested positive (Jaeho, 2020). The hospital also confirmed that the elder brother of Yi Manhui (the Sincheonji sect's leader) had received inpatient treatment for pneumonia for 5 days before he died on January 31, and 47 members of the sect attended his funeral service (Yeonghye, 2020). Since the first confirmed case on February 18, 7 of the 102 patients who had contracted the virus at the ward had died, and 14 out of the 114 employees tested positive for the coronavirus(Seongsun, 2020).
